It’s the time of the year to look back and reminisce the best Korean dramas that touched our heart this 2017. And for this Annyeong Chingu series, we are featuring the best Korean dramas per network this year. Lets begin with TVN, the home of the famous series, Goblin.
Originally I intend to list only 5 best dramas per network, but I realized this won’t be possible. I say 2017 is one of the best years for Kdramas in all genres, and all of these series deserve recognition and appreciation from all of us. So just sit back and read the list, and I assure you won’t regret landing in this post.
BUT before we head on to the list, here are few notes.
This is a list of dramas aired and ended in 2017. Any drama that began in 2017 but will end in 2018 is not included.
I only listed those dramas I’ve seen fully (from episode 1 to final episode). There are dramas who have raving reviews, but I didn’t finish because one, it’s not for me, and two, it’s boring. Feel free to suggest your favorite drama
I’ll be sharing you my personal ratings and opinion so that you’ll know what to expect. Promise, NO SPOILERS.
The list is in no particular order because how dare I! 🙂
So the must-watch TVN K-dramas of 2017 listing begins here:
Chicago Typewriter 10/10
Episodes: 16 | Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy | Release Date: April 7 – June 3, 2017
“What does it take to maintain your status as a bestselling author? Han Se Joo (Yoo Ah In) was a writer in his past life during the 1930s Japanese occupation of Korea. He has been reincarnated and is a bestselling author in the modern day. But Se Joo is depressed and has writer’s block that keeps him from completing his next bestseller. Yoo Jin Oh (Go Kyung Pyo) is a talented ghostwriter who can bail Se Joo out of his predicament, but the mysterious man has a condition for his services that Se Joo may not be able to meet. Jeon Seol (Im Soo Jung) is a veterinarian and book lover who runs her own delivery service. She becomes an anti-fan of the overrated Se Joo. Can Se Joo produce another bestseller under such difficult circumstances?” – Viki, Chicago Typewriter
Dee Say: Whenever a friend of mine approaches me and ask for K-drama suggestions aside from Goblin and Weightlifting Kim Bok Joo, I always say Chicago Typewriter! And it’s not only my unrequited love for Yooh Ah In made me say that this drama is worth watching. But this has a very beautiful story of love and friendship that lasted for decades. I have so many words that will surely convince you to watch this drama, but this will make my post REALLY LENGTHY! So for now, lemme just say, WATCH THIS…please.
Circle: Two Worlds Connected 9.5/10
Episodes: 12 | Genre: Science-Fiction Thriller | Release Date: May 22 – June 27, 2017
“Story is set in the present day and the year 2037. An alien comes to Earth. The alien believes human’s emotion should be controlled or they will have no future. The alien becomes involved with humans.” – Asianwiki, Circle
Dee Say: The trailers and previews of this series seriously got me excited. At first, I have doubts if TVN can really pull off this two-dimension kind of series. But oh boy, this indeed an exceptional drama that will blow your mind. It has a fresh take on a past-present/future storytelling and definitely a must for every K-drama fans. All of the characters in Circle shined and you will feel and witness the evolution of their stories. Yeo Jin Goo is expected to deliver a superb performance but I never thought I’ll also cheer for Lee Gi Kwang’s character. Every second in this drama is worth the attention, so if you plan to start watching this, make sure your eyes are glued to every scene.
Avengers Social Club 8/10
Episodes: 12 | Genre: Drama | Release Date: October 11 – November 16, 2017
“Kim Jung-Hye (Lee Yo-Won), Hong Do-Hee (Ra Mi-Ran), Lee Mi-Sook (Myung Se-Bin) and Lee Soo-Gyum (Jun), who all have their own different reasons, carry out a revenge plan. Kim Jung-Hye is the daughter of a family who runs a big company. She appears straightforward and arrogant, but she is actually naive and cute. Her marriage was made to benefit both families. She tries her best as a wife, but she learns that her husband has betrayed her. Hong Do-Hee sells fish at a traditional market and raises her two kids alone. Her husband passed away. She is bright and good-natured. Lee Mi-Sook was an orphan and married. She has tried hard to have a happy family with her university professor husband, but he is violent towards her. Lee Soo-Gyum joins the club to take revenge on his biological parents.” – Asianwiki, Avengers Social Club
Dee Say: This was the first series I watched after the stressful semester, and I should say it helped me heal my broken brains and heart. The casting is superb! The story is excellent and has a good balance of drama and laughter. Avengers Social Club is very funny yet heart-warming series that made me want to join the club too.
Criminal Minds 9/10
Episodes: 20 | Genre: Drama, Crime | Release Date: July 26 – September 28, 2017
“The drama follows a group of highly trained profilers in the fictional National Criminal Investigation (NCI) team who track down criminals to solve cases. It begins a year after crucial error results in a bomb detonating at a hospital, killing several SWAT officers and leaving the NCI team leader Kang Ki-hyung’s confidence badly shaken. He returns to work after a long hiatus and is immediately drawn into a serial murder case which requires the NCI team to collaborate with the local police agency’s Violent Crimes Unit. They meet temperamental police officer Kim Hyun-Joon, who appears to have a bitter grudge against Ki-hyung.” – Wikipedia, Criminal Minds
Dee Say: From a King, and now a detective. Lee Joon Gi is back to make your heart drop with this remake of a US crime drama. This is a total must not only to crime series fans (like I), but everyone. This has a story that you won’t forget.
Tomorrow With You 8/10
Episodes: 16 | Genre: Fantasy, Romance | Release Date: February 3 – March 25, 2017
“The story will revolve around Yoo So-Joon (Lee Je Hoon), a CEO of a real estate company, who has the ability to travel through time via a subway; and his wife, Song Ma-rin (Shin Min Ah), who works as a photographer. So-Joon foresees his future-self living miserably so he decides to marry Ma-rin in order to avoid that fate. As time passes, he learns to love her selflessly. – Wiki-D-Addicts, Tomorrow With You
Dee Say: Shi Min Ah and Lee Je Hoon in one story? The best! Though this drama has its fair share of positive and negative comments from the audiences, I think it still deserves to be considered as one of TVN’s best series this year. Maybe some expected too much from this drama because it followed a superb one which is Goblin.
Goblin: The Lonely and Great God 10/10
Episodes: 16 + 3 Specials | Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Comedy | Release Date: December 2, 2016 – January 21, 2017
“Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is a goblin and protector of souls. He is the landlord of the grim reaper (Lee Dong-wook) who is in charge of taking deceased souls. Shin doesn’t want immortality anymore but needs a human goblin’s bride in order to end his long life. Meanwhile, Ji Eun-tak (Kim Go-eun) is a high school student who despite her painful reality, remains optimistic. She summons the goblin by chance and through various encounters, ends up falling in love with him. Sunny (Yoo In-na) is an owner of a chicken wing shop, a woman who is loved by all men. These four people’s lives change when they encounter and their lives become entangled.” – Wikipedia, Goblin
Dee Say: This is the series that doesn’t need any reason why it deserves to be one of the best series of all time. Where were you if you haven’t checked or watched Goblin?
These were only few of Kdramas released by TVN that I think deserves the spotlight in 2017. In case I’ve missed a series, feel free to comment down below loves. Watch out for my site to read the rest of the listing for 2017. Happy New Year everyone. Saranghae!
